Hard cups

About our hard cup system

Why are we doing this?

We all are familiar with a festival-field covered with plastic cups. It does not look pretty and it is certainly not durable. This year Soenda uses reusable cups. This will save wasting 370.000 plastic cups a year. The festival will be cleaner and your drink will stay longer cool.

How does it work?

How the system works: You pay one euro for your first cup. Every time you order a new drink at the bar you hand in your old cup. If you just want to have your hands free you may exchange your cup for a coin.

Are you leaving the festival? The cup, if not damaged, can be used again. We therefore ask you to leave your cup at the bar or at the collection points. You do not get a refund, but with your euro you have contributed to a better climate. Sustainability only succeeds when we do it together! Thanks!

What is a hard cup?

A hard cup is reusable drinking cup. You can clean it after use and use it again. The cups will be professionally cleaned. Handled with care the cup can be used up to 300 times. The cup is made of hard plastic, polypropylene (PP).

Is it more sustainable than a soft cup?

Certainly, after approximately seven times. The hard cups can be used 300 times.

Hard cups versus soft cups when burned  Number when hard cups become more durable

  • 9 - 14 times: Hard cup (PP) vs soft cup (carton)
  • 7 - 8 times: Hard cup (PP) vs soft cup (PP)
  • 3 - 5 times: Hard cup (PP) vs soft cup (PS)
  • 2,5* – 5 times: Hard cup (PP) vs soft cup (PE)

* OVAM analysis uses 18 LCAs

Can I take the cup home?

That is less durable. To make sure the cup is used more than seven times (or even 300 times) the cup is used by us and other events.

Why does it costs money?

This is necessary to make it financially possible. We chose not to raise the tickets, but to make our visitors aware of their contribution to recycling. To become sustainable we have to work together and this is a step in the right direction.

Plastic fun facts:

  • every year we use hundreds of millions plastic soft cups on Dutch festivals
  • 99% of this is not recycled
  • every year 4,8 million up to 12,7 million tons of plastic end up in our seas and oceans
  • 43% of this is soft plastic
  • if nothing change, our seas and oceans contain more plastic than fish in 2050
  • plastic takes more than 500 years to degrade?
  • plastic in our ecosystem is a threat to humans and animals. Even in the air, we breathe, plastic is traced

Your hearing

Wear earplugs

Enjoying music at Soenda is great, so long as it does not damage your hearing. If you don’t own a set of earplugs, you can get one for just two tokens at any bar. These are high-quality plugs made by Pluggerz that you can wear more than once.

Where do you stand?

Enjoy the music as safe as possible: check which spot in the room gives you the best hearing experience but isn’t too close to the speakers. Keeping a distance from them is important: too near may damage your hearing.

Give your ears some rest

Find a quiet place every once in a while to give your ears a short “break”.
